Intrinsic Values and Human Rights: Corporate Duties Depend on Industry Values

Abstract Drawing on the work of Donaldson and Walsh, this article explains why for-profit companies in industries denominated by intrinsic values such as health, education justice, have heavier responsibilities when it comes to honouring human rights reflected their industry identity. Optimized collective value, overarching aim any system business, is defined terms satisfaction values, a definition that gives special meaning firms operating themselves values. Nor are companies’ rights, right healthcare, conveniently reducible ‘enlightened’ pursuit profit. For example, pharmaceutical company Pfizer or Moderna may be required make its COVID-19 vaccine more accessible victims developing countries at expense optimizing profits over long run. Such mandatory correlative duty honour healthcare derives from corporate constitutional purpose.
